Style & Substance – Larrimor’s in Pittsburgh, PA

Perhaps I am old-fashioned. When I offer my patronage to a business, especially for the very first time, it is always pleasant to receive an extra touch of appreciation in the form of good customer service. I have been hunting the market for a hybrid shoe in the form of a sneaker & monk strap. One extremely stylish pair garnered my attention some time ago, but the price-tag was too expensive for my wallet. Subsequent discoveries were also too pricey for my budget. And then the Johnston & Murphy Bolivar Monk Strap crossed my radar. An offering from their higher tiered J&M Collection, I patiently waited for a sale that would never arrive on a variety of websites. However, one day a Google search returned a suggestion for a business in Pittsburgh, PA called Larrimor’s. Now, I am sometimes suspicious of businesses on the Internet that are unknown to me. I performed a little Internet research that revealed it was indeed a legit business.

Much like other businesses that have an online presence, new customers can receive a discount code if they subscribe to receive special offers and the latest company notifications via email. And as fortune would have it, Larrimor’s had the J&M Bolivar Monk Strap in its inventory, and they had an offer for 15% off retail for new customers. And on this particular day, both shipping and sales tax were waived too. This deal was too good to ignore. Decisions were made and the acquisition was approved. So, all things calculated and considered, a $300 pair of shoes were reduced to approximately $233. It was my birthday – and I had been chasing a deal on these shoes for literally MONTHS – so I decided to treat myself. Sometimes I catch a sale too late, and then my size is no longer in stock. We have all been there gentlemen – dragging our feet on a sale way too many times with a disappointing conclusion.

So, my order was placed online on September 1st. To my surprise, I received a personal email from Jen (an eCommerce Manager) confirming the details of my order with an estimated delivery date of 5-6 business days. I received my order on September 9th. No, it was not Amazon lightning fast, but I am not from the generation of instant gratification. Sometimes patience is a virtue, and good things come to those that wait. And wow, these shoes are slick (pictures to come later). Inside the shoe box was a handwritten note from the Larrimor’s team and an additional offer for a 15% discount that will expire in 30 days. I truly appreciate the handwritten, personal thank you card. It is sadly a lost practice in an age of impersonal interactions between people. We are in a time where we definitely could use more of these kind gestures of appreciation. Now, the inventory on the Larrimor’s website isn’t as plentiful as larger, big brand chains. However, I am glad my Google search alerted me to their existence. I will definitely check them out going forward in the future.

This Week: Burberry, Gucci and the Federal Reserve Could Surprise Us

This week begins and ends with shows from big brands with a lot to prove and where expectations are low. On Monday, Burberry shows for the first time since former Coach head Joshua Schulman was brought in as chief executive. Consumers have rejected the brand’s efforts to shake up its aesthetic with designer Daniel Lee, and have been particularly hostile to an effort to charge significantly higher prices. That’s fuelled speculation that Burberry under Schulman will take a “British Coach” approach and reorient around aspirational shoppers; the company itself hasn’t confirmed a shift in strategy, so for now we’ll have to look for clues on the runway in London.

Later this week in Milan, Gucci’s rough patch is only getting deeper and wider, with sales plummeting 20 percent in the second quarter compared with a year ago. The brand urgently needs to get customers and fashion insiders excited by Sabato De Sarno’s designs; to that end, in April Gucci brought in former Louis Vuitton and Prada communications executive Stefano Cantino in a newly created deputy CEO role. A turnaround hinges on correctly diagnosing whether the brand’s troubles stem from marketing, the luxury downturn, De Sarno’s clothes or some combination of the three. The answer is unlikely to come at Friday’s show.

Meanwhile, just as attendees are filing into the Etro show in Milan on Wednesday, the Federal Reserve will release its much-anticipated interest rate decision. Economists are expecting the central bank to make its first cut, most likely a quarter percentage point, since it first increased rates in 2022 to combat rising prices. Inflation has decisively cooled – the annualised rate fell to 2.5 percent in August, the lowest since February 2021 – and softer jobs numbers are raising concerns that high borrowing costs are beginning to drag on the economy.

Lower interest rates will be mostly good news for fashion. A reduced Fed prime rate will quickly translate into lower interest payments for consumers with credit card debt. Venture capital funds will be on the hunt for higher-yielding investments, making them more likely to take a risk on fashion start-ups. Companies with heavy debt loads will have opportunities to refinance, freeing up cash to invest in their businesses.

This week’s rate cut won’t accomplish all that overnight. But if it turns out to be the first of many such reductions, as economists are predicting, the economics of the fashion industry may be transformed.

Here’s Why You Should Never Pop A Pimple On Your Nose

A TikTok with 3.6 million views posted by Dr. Ever Arias, a resident doctor at UCI Medical Center, went viral last year, scaring everyone about what can happen if you pop a pimple on your nose.

The TikTok video shows an AI depiction of a girl telling her personal story of squeezing a pimple that was bothering her, which caused a bacterial infection and eventually killed her. Arias reacts in a video alongside, noting that you should not touch pimples on a part of your face called “the triangle of death.”

Dr. Muneeb Shah, a board-certified dermatologist, also reacted to the story on TikTok, saying in the caption, “This is possible but incredibly rare.”

The AI video appears to be based on a true story about an 18-year-old who died in June in Santa Catarina, Brazil. But it got us wondering ― how much should we worry about this? So we asked dermatologists.

“The triangle of death” that Arias refers to in the TikTok video refers to the nasolabial triangle, which extends from the bridge of your nose down to your upper lip — a place where breakouts, including pimples and blackheads, commonly occur. It’s also an area where large and vital arteries and nerves run from your neck to your sinuses and up to the skull.

Although tempting, popping pimples on this part of your face can cause serious conditions, including nasal infections, vision loss, stroke and even death — so you are better off waiting for any pimples to go away on their own.

“If you pick your face with dirty fingers, dirty nails or have dirty skin, you run the risk of causing a skin infection,” said Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai in New York.

“In the central face, this is particularly risky because the blood in this area drains into a large collection of veins known as the cavernous sinus, which has a direct connection to the brain,” Zeichner said. “So theoretically, bacteria in the bloodstream could spread to the brain, causing a severe, systemic infection.”

Echoing Arias and Shah, Dr. Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand told HuffPost that getting a serious or life-threatening infection due to pimple popping is rare.

However, Houshmand, a double-board certified dermatologist and fellow at the American Academy of Dermatology, noted that “pimple popping does not help and can cause inflammation, pain and potentially permanent scarring.”

“I would recommend avoiding popping pimples in the area of the face connecting the nose to the corners of the mouth,” she said.

Here’s how popping pimples in your nasal area can cause problems.

Your sinuses are hollow spaces located under the brain, behind each eye socket. The cavernous sinus has major arteries and nerves that receive blood from the facial veins — one of which is the internal carotid artery, the most vital supply of blood to the eyes and brain. The jugular vein carries blood from the sinuses away from the brain.

Rarely, nasal infections can lead to serious outcomes. As your blood flows from your nose to other areas of the face, it’s possible for infections from the nasal area to spread to the brain, potentially causing meningitis, brain abscess, or cavernous sinus thrombosis.

When the cavernous sinus is infected, blood in the sinus can clot, which affects the optic nerve function and can cause severe headaches, eye irritation, drooping eyelids, inability to move the eyes, pain or numbness in the face and eyes, fatigue, fever, vision loss or double vision and seizures. Additionally, a blood clot in the sinuses can prevent blood from draining from the brain, which can lead to hemorrhaging as blood leaks into the brain tissues.

A blood clot in the sinuses can also cause complications like impaired speech, difficulty moving the body, fluid pressure in the skull, nerve pressure, brain injury, developmental delays and even death. The mortality rate for septic cavernous sinus thrombosis is 20% to 30%, and complete recovery is rare.

Most infections that cause cavernous sinus thrombosis are bacterial, usually caused by a staph infection. Staph bacteria can live on the face and are usually harmless until a cut (perhaps caused by pinching or squeezing a pimple) causes an infection. More serious staph infections can cause blood poisoning or toxic shock syndrome.

Aside from these more serious consequences, trying to pop a pimple yourself can also lead to permanent acne scars and more noticeable or painful acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

“You can disrupt your skin barrier and if the pimple has pus, popping a pimple can spread bacteria into other pores and hair follicles,” Houshmand said. “Many times, you are unable to pop the pimple and may end up pushing the contents of your pimple further underneath the skin. This can clog your pores even more, make acne more noticeable, or trigger inflammation under your skin.”

The Do’s And Don’ts Of Pimple Popping

Despite these risks, some people can’t resist the urge to pop a pimple. What if you do end up popping that pimple on your face? Are there preventative measures you can take to avoid a bacterial infection?

Unfortunately, there is no correct way to pop a pimple, Houshmand says. Instead, dermatologists recommend sticking to a skin care routine to help breakouts go away on their own, washing your hands before you touch your face, and seeing an esthetician if a pimple is really bothering you.

DO use products that might reduce swelling and infection.

Having a skin care routine that works for you can not only help prevent acne but can also prevent you from picking your face.

“Use preventative measures, like a skin care routine that includes acne-fighting ingredients such as BPO [benzoyl peroxide], hydroxy acids and retinoids,” Houshmand said. “Pimple patches with salicylic acid help to decrease inflammation and because the pimples are covered you won’t be able to pick. If a pimple is inflamed, use a cold compress or ice to help.”

Applying benzoyl peroxide, an over-the-counter medication with anti-bacterial properties, can help metabolize the skin.

“Stick to a benzoyl peroxide, which works by lowering levels of acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflammation in the skin,” Zeichner said.

DON’T try to use estheticians’ tools at home.

Trying pimple extractions on your own can do more harm than good. According to the Associated Skin Care Professionals, attempting home extractions can damage your pores, spread bacteria and spread the breakout.

Instead, visit a trained esthetician or trained skin care professional, who will do extractions using the proper skin care products and devices.

“When performed the right way, with clean instruments and without applying too much pressure as to cause trauma to the skin, they can effectively improve the complexion,” Zeichner said. “Trying to pop red, angry pimples or painful undergrounders inevitably leads to more harm than good. These are not poppable pimples, so attempts will result in inflammation, potential infections, or even scars.”

DO wash your hands.

Since infections are caused by spreading bacteria, it’s important to wash your hands before touching your face to make sure harmful bacteria don’t enter the skin barrier. Using a tissue or wet towel can help protect your face.

Touching your face with unwashed hands will not help clear breakouts any faster. Generally, keeping your hands clean can keep unwanted bacteria away from your face.

“Most pimples will resolve on their own,” Shah said.

World Afro Day Urges UK Parliament to Adopt Hair Discrimination Policy

Ahead of the eighth annual celebration of World Afro Day on Sept. 15, over 100 supporters have signed an open letter to the UK government campaigning to make the UK the first Western nation with a law that protects people against hair discrimination.

In the US, 27 states have adopted similar legislation, which was first enacted as the Crown Act in California in 2019. These laws prohibit hair-based discrimination and require cosmetology schools to teach a curriculum on textured hair, which includes coiled, curly and wavy hair types.

The World Afro Day letter, spearheaded by the nonprofit organisation of the same name, calls upon the 2010 Equality Act to reform and include naturally curly or coiled hair as a protected characteristic. This act currently protects individuals from workplace discrimination based on race, sex, or disability.

Supporters of the letter include Beverly Knight, Patrick Hutchinson, Labour MP Paulette Hamilton and Spice Girls member Mel B, who expressed her experiences with hair discrimination and her stance on World Afro Day in an Instagram post. “I’m proud to support World Afro Day in its call for the Equality Act to protect against Afro hair discrimination in the UK,” she wrote.

Discriminatory and violent acts based on hair discrimination against the Black community can be traced back to the slave trade. Countless Black Britons still face hair discrimination in the workplace and schools, according to World Afro Day. Its letter cites that 98 percent of Black Britons feel that in order to fit into the workplace, they feel the need to adapt their speech, appearance and hairstyles. Children are unfairly penalised and sent home for wearing natural styles in their classrooms.
