Practicing Attentiveness to the Holy Spirit

July 11, 2024BruceDayne

In the Christian faith, we are called to have a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity. The Spirit is our Guide, Counselor, and Comforter, and He desires to speak to us and guide us in our daily lives. To experience His presence and guidance, we must cultivate attentiveness and discernment. The Greek word for discernment is diakrisis. It means “judgment” or “distinction.” In the New Testament, it is used to describe the ability to distinguish between good and evil, truth and error, and to make wise decisions. Discernment is an important theme in the Bible, and it is considered a gift for believers to develop in order to navigate the challenges of life and to make wise decisions that align with God’s will. In this post, we’ll explore practical ways to listen to the Holy Spirit and discern His leading.

Cultivate a Quiet Heart

In a world filled with noise and distractions, it’s essential to create space for us to hear the Holy spirit. Habakkuk 2:20 says, “the LORD is in his holy temple; let the whole earth be silent in his presence.” This verse reminds us to quiet our hearts and minds, acknowledging God’s presence and sovereignty. This means prioritizing silence, solitude, and contemplation. As we quiet our hearts and minds, we become more attuned to the gentle whispers of the Spirit (1 Kings 19:11-13).

Practical Step: Set aside ten to fifteen minutes each day for silent contemplation and meditation. This practice helps calm your mind and heart, creating space for a surrendered posture and a focused awareness to listen for the Holy spirit.

Study the Scriptures

The Bible is the primary way The Holy Spirit speaks to us, revealing His character, plans, and purposes. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path” (Ps. 119:105). As we study Scripture, we become familiar with the Holy Spirit’s language and tone, enabling us to recognize His voice in our lives (Heb. 4:12).

Practical Step: Start a daily Bible reading plan, committing to read a portion of Scripture each day. Take notes, ask questions, and seek to understand the context and application of the passage. Be patient, humble and open by asking The Holy Spirit to reveal himself to you.

Pray for Guidance

“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matt. 7:7-8). Prayer is a vital aspect of our relationship with God, and it’s essential to ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and wisdom. As we pray, we acknowledge our dependence on Him and invite Him to lead us (Jas. 1:5).

Practical Step: Write down specific prayer requests and wait expectantly for the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Be still and listen for impressions, ideas, or verses that come to mind.  Record your insights and reflect on them throughout the day.

Practice Active Listening

The Lord said, “Listen to my words . . .” (Num. 12:6). Listening is a crucial aspect of discerning the Holy Spirit’s voice. We must tune our hearts to hear His gentle whispers, paying attention to the thoughts, impressions, and sensations that arise within us (John 10:27).

Practical Step: Take a “listening walk” outside, paying attention to your surroundings and the thoughts that arise. Notice the sights, sounds, and smells, and ask the Holy Spirit to speak through these experiences. Journal your observations using your five senses.

  1. Step outside and take a slow, intentional walk.
  2. Pay attention to your surroundings, using all 5 senses.
  3. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak through these experiences.
  4. Journal your observations, noting any insights or impressions that arise.

Seek Wise Counsel

“Without guidance, a people will fall, but with many counselors there is deliverance.” (Prov. 11:14). Surrounding ourselves with mature believers who are sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading provides wisdom and accountability. We can seek their counsel and guidance, knowing that iron sharpens iron (Prov. 27:17).

Practical Step: Identify a spiritual mentor or accountability partner and schedule regular meetings. Share your struggles, questions, and desires, and ask for her input and guidance. Be open to her wisdom and perspective.

Test and Discern

“Test the spirits to see if they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Discernment is crucial in our walk with God as we distinguish between the Holy Spirit’s voice and other influences. We must evaluate our thoughts, emotions, and experiences against Scripture, seeking confirmation from the Spirit (1 Cor. 2:14-16).

Practical Step: When faced with a decision or uncertain situation, write down pros and cons, and then ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. Wait for a sense of peace or clarity, and evaluate your thoughts against Scripture.

Practice Obedience

“If you love me, you will keep my commands” (John 14:15). Obedience is the natural response to hearing the Holy Spirit’s voice. As we surrender to His guidance, we demonstrate our love and trust in God, inviting Him to transform our lives (John 15:10).

Practical Step: Identify an area where you feel the Holy Spirit is prompting you to obey, such as forgiving someone or stepping out in faith. Take concrete action, trusting in God’s guidance and strength. Reflect on your experience and seek accountability from a trusted friend or mentor.

As we practice attentiveness to the Holy Spirit, we become more attuned to His gentle whispers and better equipped to discern His voice. By cultivating a quiet heart, studying Scripture, praying for guidance, practicing active listening, seeking wise counsel, testing and discerning, and practicing obedience, we demonstrate our love and trust in God. May we continue to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and wisdom, trusting in His transformative power in our lives.
