Ingredients 101: The Benefits of Grapeseed Oil for Hair Growth
By Jacqueline Samaroo
Continuing our look at beneficial hair oils here is what you need to know about the benefits of grapeseed oil for hair growth.
There are many different types of hair oils that you can use in your natural hair care routine. Each one has its own benefits but they are all renowned for helping you achieve healthy, shiny hair. The choice of a favorite hair oil or the best oil for curly haircare will, of course, differ depending on the naturalista you talk to.
But, if hair oils have one downside it’s that they can be so greasy and sticky, right? They can be really hard to wash off if you apply even a bit extra and can weigh down finer hair types.
But the good news is, not all oils do that! One of the best alternatives to mainstream oils such as coconut and castor is actually grape seed oil. There are in fact, many benefits of grapeseed oil for hair. But before we discuss those, let’s address this first- why grapeseed oil and not the highly praised olive oil?
Grapeseed oil vs olive oil for hair
For years, olive oil has been one of the choicest oils used in cooking, in skincare, and of course, in haircare too. Using olive oil on hair can give it extra shine, nourish the tips, and promote hair growth.
But despite all the goodness, don’t you just despise how greasy it makes your hair feel?
Use more of it and it sticks to the strands, is hard to wash off, and likely to attract more dirt and grime.
That’s where grapeseed oil emerges as the real winner! One of the benefits of grapeseed oil for hair is that it is beautifully lightweight. It gets absorbed in the hair and scalp super easily, while hydrating and providing olive oil-equivalent shine to the strands!
One oil, many benefits: grapeseed
Discourages dandruff
You might be wondering – other than being lightweight, is grapeseed oil good for hair? Definitely, since one of its properties is to act as an emollient. This helps in loosening the dead skin cells from dandruff on the scalp, which you can then wash off easily. While grapeseed oil won’t be able to cure dandruff fully, it certainly can discourage its buildup on your hair. Since it’s so lightweight, using this oil a little excessively won’t cause buildup on your scalp either!
Has antioxidant properties
There is a lot your hair gets exposed to daily- pollution, harmful free radicals in the environment around… poor strands! Grapeseed oil to the rescue though. This oil contains Vitamin E and has antioxidant properties which defend your hair from free radicals and moisturize each strand deeply.
Pro tip: always look for cold-pressed grapeseed oil, because it’s completely free of solvents! You can also look for shampoos that contain grapeseed oil, if you’re not much into oils but still want to see the benefits of this one.
Boosts hair growth and prevents breakage
Among the myriad benefits of grapeseed oil for hair, is its ability to stimulate hair growth. Isn’t that great news? What’s more, it doesn’t just boost hair follicle growth and cell production, it also prevents breakage. By sealing in the moisture in your hair, the oil essentially protects it from split ends and breakage due to damage! Just a few spoons of this oil on its own can work miracles for your hair if left on just half an hour before washing it. For maximum benefit, of course, you can leave it on longer.
Great for damaged hair
Has your hair gone through it all – color treatment to heat styling? Or is it naturally prone to damage? You’ll love grapeseed oil in that case! Studies prove that certain oils such as grapeseed oil act as natural conditioners for hair. Meaning this oil strengthens your hair strands from the root and protects from further damage! That’s just one of the many benefits of grapeseed oil for hair.
Defends against UV
By now we all know this by heart- UV rays are harmful! It’s a no-brainer then that we need to do all we can to protect our skin from it. But what about hair? Not many natural substances can protect hair from UV exposure, but grapeseed oil has properties that can. By defending your hair from UV, this miracle oil protects it from damage, breakage, and overall hair loss too.
So, is grapeseed oil good for hair? Hell, yes!
Now that you know all about the benefits of grapeseed oil for hair, we are sure you’ll want to add it to your hair care routine. If you do, be prepared for silky, thick, and healthy hair!
