I always look forward to setting the table for dinner- large or small. Since I’m not the chef of the family, I decided long ago that this would be my skill. This year, I reimagined our holiday tables to be especially festive and less traditional, filled with an eclectic assortment of colorful patterns and pieces that feel welcoming and full of good cheer. For my first table, I loved including plates I’ve been collecting over the years, set on a favorite blue and white tablecloth, with sheer blue placemats, complemented by new, brightly colored napkins and a mix of colorful glassware. I had fun with the finishing touches – pink peonies in a variety of small vases, petite living topiaries, Christmas tree candles, and party crackers, a holiday table must-have to play in-between dinner and dessert.

For my second holiday table, I selected an elegant, monochromatic tone, in a rich rosy-red. I added floral linen placemats and napkins (which also come in a lovely green) on fabric I found, in lieu of a table cloth, I selected plates with red accents new to my collection. Finishing touches included family heirloom silverware, deep red antique peonies (what a find in December!), and candlesticks filled with tall pink tapers for a romantic holiday style.

No matter the table setting, our holiday meals are traditionally served family style, with platters and serving dishes passed around. Always special evenings filled with excited conversation, laughter, and love!

Woven Placemat

A delicately woven placemat will add a bit of texture to your holiday table. Set placemats on their own, or over a tablecloth for a layered effect.
