1. Letting A Woman (Or Anyone) Choose For You
I know it sounds a little harsh, but women are not at fault here.
It's us.
We tend to rely on our wives and girlfriends far too much when it comes to choosing men's grooming products. It might be out of laziness or insecurity.
The fact is this: No one knows your body except you.
Only you can know whether you deal with oily skin, need a closer shave, or have thin hair. If you want results, you need to set the time aside to research ingredients and make the right choice. What works for others may not work for you.
2. Confusing Laziness With Brand Loyalty
At the end of the day, men are creatures of habit.
I'm willing to bet your “go-to” shaving cream was the one you chose when you walked into the convenience store at age 17.
It's done a mediocre job since then, but you're content.
You call yourself “loyal.”
This is a fallacy. When it comes to men's grooming products, you need to find a brand you genuinely love.
My advice? Research brands that promote honesty with their products. We're talking grooming products that don't confuse you with weird names.
This is one of the many reasons I'm proud of my company VITAMAN – we're straightforward about what we put in each bottle.
3. Thinking Modern Tools Are Better
Let's use shaving as an example.
The safety razor has been around since the 19th century and we've stopped using it. Cartridge razors dominate the market.
However, the safety razor will give you a closer shave and reduce irritation. It's also less expensive and wasteful. Did you know that cartridge razors produce millions of tons worth of waste a year?
Why do we stick to cartridge razors then? The answer is convenience.
It all goes back to point number 2 – laziness. Gents, if you put in the time to find the best tool, your body will thank you for it.
For an even closer shave, consider the venerable straight razor. However, you can hurt yourself if you don't use proper shaving technique. Be careful.
4. Thinking Soap Is Just Soap
A lot of guys have a tendency to use the same soap on their bodies, head, and face.
This is a mistake.
Our skin is not the same across the board. Let's take Lava soap for instance – it's designed specifically for men's hands. I tried using it on my body, and it was so rough that I damaged my skin.
You need to find gentler soaps according to your needs.
An example: Our facial skin is generally more sensitive than the rest of the skin on the body.
Some brands make natural soaps that handle both skin types, but you will most likely need to find a specific cleanser for your face.
Think about it – if you're trying to make your skin better by washing it, destroying it with the wrong soap defeats the purpose.
5. Not Paying Attention To Ingredients
The stuff they put in men's grooming products today is abhorrent.
Let's take shaving cream for instance.
A can of Barbasol contains ingredients such as butane and propane. If you can throw it in a fire and blow it up, you probably shouldn't put it on your face.
Oftentimes you'll see formaldehyde in shampoo. Yeah, the carcinogen we use to preserve corpses.
While cheap to produce, these can damage your body in the long run, with side effects ranging from skin irritation to full-blown hair loss.
Men's grooming products that come with natural ingredients provide more than cleaning, they provide health benefits as well.
Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Vitamin E, and Eucalyptus Oil are examples of natural ingredients that heal the skin while strengthening it.
These are just some of the ingredients used by VITAMAN – we use nothing but the BEST in our natural men's grooming products.
6. Not Using Products In Conjunction
Using a facial cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer in a routine will get you more results than simply applying the cleanser.
Exfoliation thoroughly scrubs the skin by removing dead skin cells. The moisturizer maintains the oil balance and fight off wrinkles.
Why do I emphasize the use of shaving oil before shaving cream?
Oil is hydrophobic, meaning it won't mix with the water base in shaving cream. This means you get two layers of skin protection and a smoother shave.
Are you seeing a pattern?
Using multiple products THE RIGHT WAY doubles down on the results.
7. Not Having A Routine
There are several benefits to having an effective grooming routine…
The most obvious one is the reduced stress. Once you have grooming down to a science, you never have to worry about it again (until you run out of products).
Secondly, a routine gives you a base from which to expand and improve.
Let's say you've mastered the art of shaving with the grain. You have the experience to start going AGAINST grain for an even closer shave.
You'll learn that a safety razor does the job better than a simple cartridge razor – more blades mean more room for error. A cartridge razor could also pull your stubble too far over and produce ingrown hairs.
Experience is key, and a routine gives you a solid foundation to practice.
8. Not Using The Right Tools
You wouldn't use a sledgehammer on a drywall nail, right?
Then why would you use clippers on your nails? Clippers – especially cheap ones – will crush the nail rather than cut it. Before you know it, you got a bigger problem on your hands.
The right tool for the job would be a simple file or nail scissors. The file can grind the nail down (remember to file in one direction) while the scissors cut effectively.
The same applies to every aspect of grooming, gentlemen – do your research.
9. Never Choosing A Signature Scent
How do you find a signature fragrance?
Simple, you go with what you like.
It doesn't matter how bold it is, whether or not your wife loves it, or what your friends say.
Your signature scent is your own – it's meant to imbue YOU with confidence.
Conduct a search. Once you fall in love with a fragrance, don't think too hard on it. Get that bottle!
10. Using Deodorant
That's right, I said it.
Most deodorants and antiperspirants come packed with harmful chemicals like aluminum. This actually blocks your pores to stop sweating altogether. Why would you want that, knowing that sweat naturally cleanses the body?
You can find out more by checking out my article on deodorants – and why you should stop using them altogether.
Summary – Men's Grooming Mistakes
Knowledge is power.
When it comes to men's grooming products, you have to be the one to step up and do the research. You're the only one who can decide which products work best for your body and skin.
The results are worth the work – and the work is minimal.
VITAMAN make the best natural men's grooming products in the world – and I want you to try them.
I'm so confident you'll love our products, I'll give you your money back if you don't.
