Also known as collar tabs, stiffs, or sticks – collar stays are designed to keep your dress shirt collar intact.
Most quality dress shirts come with small pockets beneath the collar where the stays are inserted. Some even come with stays off the rack.
They are made from several materials – from bone to metal, to plastic.
The same rules apply as with any tool: Higher-quality materials are an initial investment, but they'll endure a lifetime of abuse.
The problem with plastic collar stays is that they are prone to bending – leading to you buying replacements. However, metal and bone stays don't have this issue.
For extra stiffness, magnetic collar stays are available to hold the collar against the shirt. Some even offer hooks for small buttons or adjustable length features.
Make sure to remove your collar stays before washing, dry cleaning, or ironing a shirt. Cleaning can damage both the shirt and the stays.
If you try the iron with the tabs still in the collar, you'll leave an impression of the tab visible through the fabric.

You're safer getting a cool lapel pin for the sake of versatility. Make sure you place your pin over the buttonhole on your lapel.
