Summer Style Upgrade 1. The Jersey Polo
Polos have been a staple of men's style for well over a century. What started as a uniform for Polo players in the British Raj spread like wildfire across the world.
Quality Polos come in two distinct styles: Pique and Jersey.
Pique is the more traditional fabric – it's thick, heavy, and resembles a waffle with its easily visible cross-hatched weave.
Jersey is the very same fabric used with plain T-shirts and even underwear. It's considered a performance fabric – perfect for thriving under the sun.
The fact they're short-sleeved also helps!
A well-made Jersey polo is also easily paired with the finer accouterments of men's style: A sports jacket or a suit would blend in seamlessly.
It's an easy summer style upgrade.
Summer Style Upgrade 2. The Knit Tie
Summer is all about the casual vibe – and for you gentlemen who love ties, smooth silk might be too formal
This is the perfect time to try your luck with a knit tie. Traditional knit ties have a uniquely flat bottom due to how they are, well, knit.
To make a pointed knit tie, you'd have to manually adjust the knots – a difficult task to say the least.
However, this style adds texture to your outfit, and it blends well with most ensembles that use a dress shirt.
Mottled yarn works if you want to double down on texture. A unique pattern is made by mixing untreated parts of the yarn to create a highly mottled color effect at the end of the milling process.
This only reinforces the casual texture offered by the tie itself, making it a summer-sporting masterpiece.
Summer Style Upgrade 3. Chino Shorts
Cargo shorts, responsible for the downfall of too many men – men who insist on looking like boys.
Luckily, it's one of the most painless summer style upgrades you can make.
Replace the abomination with some simple, fitted chino shorts. The inseam should fall between 9 or 10 inches.
Pastels are viable choices in the summertime. If that's too much though, then you can't go wrong with khaki or navy.
Summer Style Upgrade 4. Tropical Weight Wool Trousers
You've learned to wear shorts with style…
But you're not finished yet. It's time to bring in some dress trousers.
Wool sounds like it wouldn't do well in the heat, but Tropical Weight is different. The fabric is woven to leave wider gaps in the garment, allowing for breathability.
In fact, this helps your body recycle moisture, keeping any potential perspiration from emerging.
Summer Style Upgrade 5. Webbed Belts
Once you change to chinos, you'll have to ditch the wide casual belts in favor of something sleek.
And I don't mean a dress belt.
Webbed belts are excellent (and casual) in place of leather. They come in a wide range of fabrics, whether it be linen, hemp, or cotton.
You can't beat the durability, either. Heavier-duty material such as Dyneema can support major strain. We're taking 12,000 pounds or more!
As a summer style upgrade, it helps maintain a sleek appearance while adding some texture to your look.
Summer Style Upgrade 6. From Sandals To Loafers
Sandals seem comfortable, but they break easily… and they won't work in any setting beyond the poolside.
The answer? Leather men's loafers.
Ironically, Loafers didn't begin as a summer shoe. They were originally slippers used by Norwegian peasants.
An entrepreneur by the name of G.H. Bass turned them into a worldwide phenomenon, releasing them in 1936 as “Weejuns.”
The name was a play on “Norwegian” – paying homage to their origins.
Loafers evolved into a summer style staple because of their construction. They expose more of the foot, making them less cumbersome than other dress shoes.
They also slip on easily!
You can't beat the range in men's loafers, either. From classic Penny loafers to the more austere Belgian loafers, there is sure to be a style that suits you.
Summer Style Upgrade 7. From Heavy Dress Socks To No-Show Socks
Long socks under the sun? I hope you like your feet stinking.
This summer style upgrade is as comfortable as it is risque.
No-show socks leave the upper foot exposed (like a loafer does) and leave your ankles with nothing but fresh air.
They pair well with loafers or boat shoes because they give the illusion that there's nothing there.
Why wear socks at all? Three reasons…
First, you don't want unbearable foot funk to ruin your day (And that of others). Secondly, socks protect the leather itself from moisture which causes irreparable damage over time.
Lastly… it's just more comfortable.
Summer Style Upgrade 8. Linen Shirts
T-shirts, great for the most relaxed occasions… but they get old after a while.
You need an upgrade, but a solid cotton dress shirt won't do in the sweltering heat.
Linen is the single most durable thread in the world. There is a reason it was used in sails as early as 8,000 BC.
Despite its strength, linen fibers are actually hollow which makes them light and breathable.
Suiting Linen is the subcategory most often associated with clothing. It's a medium-weight fabric with a smooth finish. This is what you'll most likely find on the best linen shirts.
You can find them in long-sleeved and short-sleeved variants like any shirt style. If you want to double down on the cooling factor, then short sleeves are the way to go.
Sure, it's prone to wrinkling… but it's a minor inconvenience next to the potential benefits.
Summer Style Upgrade 9. Seersucker jackets
So you still love suits and sports jackets, but they can't hack the heat.
Seersucker is a thin, puckered cotton fabric sold commonly in a striped pattern. The name comes from the Hindi word kshirsharkara and the Persian shîr and shakar.
Combined, this translates to “milk and sugar” which alludes to the rough texture and color of the fabric.
Seersucker made it to the US in 1907 through New Orleans, becoming a staple among Southern gentlemen during the hotter months.
As far as summer style upgrades go, this is the best jacket for the job.
Summer Style Upgrade 10. Aquatic Fragrances
Having trouble choosing a fragrance?
Let's save you the trouble. This summer, consider an aquatic fragrance.
Aquatic scents are reminiscent of the sea. Picture sitting at the beach, and a subtle breeze comes in from the ocean and grazes your nose.
Perfumers achieve this effect with a using Headspace Technology – a method in which the scent molecules around objects are isolated for replication later on.
Popular aquatic men's fragrances include Acqua Di Gio, Cool Water by Davidoff, and Virgin Island Water by Creed.
This is my one and only invisible summer style upgrade.
Summary – Summer Style Upgrades
Summer is here, and so is the heat.
Believe it or not, you can look better by wearing less – lighter fabrics, lighter shoes, and lighter accessories.
Revolutionize your look this summer, it's easier than you think.
