5 Breakout Hair Colors That Will Be Everywhere This Spring

This spring, think of your natural hair color like your favorite white t-shirt: a foundation on which to accessorize. For the upcoming season, the shades on the rise are all about leaning into your God-given roots, then elevating them with add-ons — like a high-shine gloss or rose-dipped tips.

The idea is universally applicable, no matter your hair color, because the embellishments drive the end result. If you want to be blonde, forgo the single-process platinum for a modern, rooted tweed. Or, if you're working with a dark base, add teeny golden babylights for instant sparkle and dimension.

Ahead, scroll through the five breakout hair colors of spring 2020 — consider them the tailored blazer or bright-pink lipstick that takes your basic v-neck and turns it into your new favorite outfit.

Rooted Tweed

Think of a tweed shade like an earthy stone blonde — a blend of warm yellow and ash blonde highlights that are grounded with a deeper root color. "Adding a dark root gives the finished color a little more edge and dimension," says colorist Stephanie Brown out of NYC's trendy IGK Salon. "It's also super low maintenance."

Gold Twilighting

Brown's "twilighting" technique creates tiny pops of bright color over a dark base, almost like twinkle lights. "The process is a combination of babylights and ombré," Brown explains. "It’s brunette with golden flecks, which — because the highlight starts off the root — grows out very nicely."

Rose-Dipped Ends

Born out of the rose-gold color trend comes the spring 2020 take: rose-dipped tips. Here, you can see how the bleached pink-orange tone washes over a glossy brunette shade like a sunset.

Glass Blonde

Hairstylist Ruslan Nureev recently posted this dream dirty-blonde color on model Josephine Skriver. The natural blonde tone is only half the story, the real magic comes from the lacquered coat of shine. Nureev's pro styling secret is two-fold — clip-in extensions and a 1.25-inch Harry Josh curling iron — but a clear hair gloss would do wonders in giving your blonde a glass-like sheen, too.

Amber Highlights

We first noticed amber highlights on the streets of New York City during Fashion Week, with everyone from Kendall Jenner to budding street-style influencers wearing a similar variation on a warm brunette. For its versatility, the subtle brunette lift will continue to be a huge salon request come spring.
