Now that design has become a big part of my day-to-day work, I have a whole new appreciation for pieces that dance between the seasons with perfect balance. It’s not always easy to combine features typically associated with different parts of the year in a way that feels effortless, not forced. Winter florals are the perfect example. If they don’t have just the right color palette, scale, or silhouette, the floral prints I love can easily feel out of place in January and February. When done right, though, they add an irresistible freshness to my winter wardrobe that holds me over until early March, when the flowers in Charleston first burst into bloom.

One of the most natural ways to wear winter florals is to find styles with a muted print against a dark backdrop, like this peplum top, this balloon-sleeve blouse, or this ruffled top. Any of these pieces would pair easily with denim and a faux fur jacket or a midi skirt and boots during the chilly weeks we’re in the midst of. Monochromatic pieces boast similar versatility, no matter the season. The tonal florals of this lavender top and this pink ruffled blouse make subtly lovely statement that is as effortless to style as a solid-colored piece.

Floral Jacquard Cotton Top

The puff-sleeved silhouete and rose print of this LoveShackFancy top give it a lovely, vintage-inspired feel. Style with light-wash denim like this pair, a pink headband, and flats.

Ruffle Midi Dress

Floral cotton midi dresses transition effortlessly from one season to the next. Wear this one with tall boots for now, and then switch to heeled mules as the temperatures rise.

Embroidered Blouse

This sweet embroidered blouse boasts endless versatility, whether you dress it up (I’d wear it tucked into a silk skirt with heels) or down (with high-waisted denim and a pair of sneakers).

I live in floral dresses during the spring and summer, so it’s no surprise that I’m always keeping an eye out for versions I can wear in the winter. Even pastel or bright florals can look elegant and timely this season with features like long sleeves, tailored pleats, midi hemlines, or statement ruffles. The muted color palette tip rings true with dresses too; I love this ruffled Isabel Marant in ecru and rose and the combination of flowers and dots on this Dolan midi. See below for even more winter floral tops and dresses I’ve been admiring lately, all of which are available at Nordstrom.
