A Brief Introduction To Fragrances
Before diving in, we need to make sure we have a decent understanding of a fragrance's makeup. We won't go too deep, whole books and centuries worth of studies have been poured into the art of fragrance. We couldn't hope to scratch the surface inside of one article.Fragrances are divided into three scent levels:
- Top Notes are what hit you first. These comprise lighter, more friendly scents (mostly) in the floral and fruity category. However, this will only last about 15 minutes depending on your chosen cologne.
- Heart Notes form the core of the fragrance. This “second wave” starts to linger as the top notes dissipate, sticking around for an additional 2-4 hours.
- Base Notes consist of the heavier, denser molecules that just won't disperse! This is where you'll find the rougher, more “masculine” notes like oakmoss, vetiver, and musk. You can expect this level to last anywhere between 4-8 hours.
1. Jean-Paul Le Male Essence De Parfum
Jean-Paul Gaultier made a big impact in the fashion world over the course of his extensive career. One such impact was the debut of his fragrance line, Le Male Essence. It's a richly masculine fragrance, and it definitely belongs at the top of my list (Even though it's not ranked).- Top Notes: Cardamom, bergamot, artemisia, pepper.
- Heart Notes: Lavender, strong leather, cinnamon.
- Base Notes: Tonka bean, amber wood, vanilla.
2. Yves Saint Laurent Pour Homme Eau de Toilette
This lovely fragrance is meant to embody sensuality in a man that is both sensual and cultured. It's been said to invoke thoughts of luxury and timeless style. It's perfect for the man looking to be seductive while at the same time keeping things classical.- Top Notes: Lemon, lavender, verbana.
- Heart Notes: Rosewood, rosemary, geranium.
- Base Notes: Patchouli, amber, tonka bean, sandalwood, vetiver, cedar, musk.
3. Bleu De Chanel
This fragrance starts you off with a burst of lemon and grapefruit before easing into a blanket of ginger, and finally settling with notes of patchouli, vetiver, cedar, and incense. It's designed for rebellious men who are nonetheless fresh, clean, and eager to snag the ladies.- Top Notes: Powerful lemon, mint, pink pepper, strong grapefruit
- Heart Notes: Potent ginger, nutmeg, jasmine, Iso E Super.
- Base Notes: Labdanum, sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, incense, cedar, musk.
4. Eau Sauvage Eau De Toilette by Dior
This is a popular one as far as sexy men's colognes go. It's been referred to as the fragrance belonging to the Cult of Elegance. It serves as a burst of citrus, herbs, and oakmoss all rolled into one. The result is a refined, yet sensual amalgamation that is sure to turn heads.- Top Notes: Strong lemon, lime, basil, rosemary, caraway.
- Heart Notes: Coriander, rose, sandalwood, patchouli, orris root, jasmine, carnation.
- Base Notes: Amber, musk, oakmoss, vetiver.
5. Eau Sauvage Eau De Parfum by Dior
So, what's the difference between the Eau de Parfum (EDP) and the Eau de Toilette (EDT)? Even though the latter belongs on this list, the former is actually more potent. Even though “perfume” is perceived as feminine by most guys, it's actually stronger. EDP has a purity level of about 15% to 20%, making for a longer-lasting and invigorating scent.- Top Notes: Bergamot, citron, petitgrain.
- Heart Notes: Vetiver, lavender, hedione.
- Base Notes: Myrrh, patchouli, oakmoss.
6. Versace Eros
Versace is a brand grounded in Greek mythology. Heck, their logo is a depiction of Medusa! Eros, the god of love, is invoked here – do you need any more proof for the intention behind it? It establishes a man who is not only wealthy but confident and cultured. It brings to mind the Greek isles, as well as the many excesses and decadence of the old days.- Top Notes: Mint, apple, lemon.
- Heart Notes: Tonka Bean, geranium, ambroxan.
- Base Notes: Cedar, vetiver, oakmoss.
7. Valentino Uomo
This is gourmand at its finest. At first, you're struck with some bergamot before hitting a heart of chocolate and coffee. Finally, things level out with leather and cedar. With this scent, you'll invoke thoughts of indulgence. This is definitely something you want to be associated with you when it comes to attraction.- Top Notes: Bergamot, myrtle.
- Heart Notes: Coffee, chocolate, hazelnut.
- Base Notes: Leather, cedar.
8. Bvlgari – Black Orient
The goal of this fragrance is to call on one thing: virility. The combination of powerfully-masculine scents combined in this bottle is meant to reconnect its wearer with the “original state” of man. Heck, I believe it!- Top Notes: Rum, cardamon.
- Heart Notes: Taif Rose, tuberose.
- Base Notes: Leather, oud.
9. Amouge – Interlude Man
Do you like chaos and disorder? Do you love the whole bad boy aesthetic? Then I've got a cologne for you. The Interlude Man is for those amongst you that look up to outlaws. It'll shroud you in an aura of mystery – wear it well!- Top Notes: Bergamot, oregano, pepper.
- Heart Notes: Incense, opoponax, amber.
- Base Notes: Leather, oud, sandalwood, some patchouli.
10. John Varvatos – Dark Rebel Rider
The name says it all. This is all about the biker, the man who doesn't give a damn, the man who's out to make his way no matter what. Use this if you plan on spending a lot of time with a woman, as it starts strong and seamlessly mellows out.- Top Notes: Orange, aldehydes, saffron, marjoram, hyssop.
- Heart Notes: Resin, balsam, olibanum.
- Base Notes: “Russian” leather is dominant, followed by cacao.
11. Dolce & Gabbana – Intenso
This EDP lives up to its name. It'll introduce you through scent reminiscent of running steams, along with basil and lavender. These give way to tobacco notes, as well as cypress and musk toward the very end.- Top Notes: Water notes, basil, lavender, geranium, marigold.
- Heart Notes: Tobacco, hay, moepel accord, bran, sage.
- Base Notes: Labdanum, sandalwood, cypress, musk, amber.
12. Paco Rabanne – Invictus
As a sexy men's cologne, this is the designed to – you guessed it, show a man off as indomitable. This is for you guys out there that want there to be no doubt as to who is in charge. With this fragrance, you'll exude power and invincibility. You'll feel like you can take the world on.- Top Notes: Grapefruit, sea notes, mandarin.
- Heart Notes: Bay leaf, jasmine.
- Base Notes: Guaiac wood, oakmoss, patchouli, ambergris.
13. Paco Rabanne – 1 Million
We're still with Rabanne because this fragrance is one you need if you want to exude wealth. True to its name, the 1 Million makes you smell like a million bucks. Its focus on luxurious mandarin, tobacco, and tonka bean make it a force to be reckoned with.- Top Notes: Mandarin, cinnamon.
- Heart Notes: Tobacco, myrrh.
- Base Notes: Patchouli, Tonka Bean.
14. Tom Ford Noir Anthracite
Tom Ford's got it made as far as sexy men's colognes go. It's because they have plenty to offer gentlemen of all stripes. To me, the Anthracite stands out. It was designed to be perilously seductive – bearing strong citrus against rich woody notes for instance. It's truly a smell to behold.- Top Notes: Bergamot, Sichuan pepper, ginger.
- Heart Notes: Spices, galbanum, jasmine.
- Base Notes: Sandalwood, cedar, ebony, amberwood, birch, leather, patchouli.
15. Jimmy Choo Man Intense
A clean, quintessential fragrance that serves well in most occasions. Many reviews that I've seen say it works well for the office. This is the kind of smell worn by the man who is an all-around expert.- Top Notes: Lavender, melon, mandarin.
