After my big closet clean that I shared on Instagram last weekend, I’ve received quite a few inquiries asking how I manage to keep things so minimal.
Firstly, a ton of you asked about how I manage all of the gifted product as a fashion blogger. Fashion bloggers are infamous for receiving a ton of gifted product. When I first started out {8 years ago!) I was overwhelmed and would say “yes” in excitement to all of the generous offers. Over time, I hated all of the waste and a few years ago Grant and I moved houses. When we moved, I changed my work address to a PO Box and it took several years to finally weed out being gifted unnecessary products and pieces that I wasn’t going to use or wear. Upon the move to a PO Box, eventually brands would get products sent back to them when they didn’t have my correct address. This way when brands reached out about gifting, I was able to really say “No thank you” OR request a look book to select only pieces that I might want to incorporate for my website.
With that said, it’s still quite an uphill battle to keep my closet clean on a daily basis.
I’m not going to tell you how to spring clean, but how to offer daily or weekly maintenance on your wardrobe so it feels fresh.
No matter what your profession, I think it’s a challenge we all {fashionistas} face. So here are a few of my friendly tips on how to keep things feeling clean.
1. Hanging Direction
The very first thing I do is hang all of my clothing to face the same direction and for me it’s left. If you haven’t already done so, you need to invest in good hangers. I score mine off Amazon and they are wooden. Please do this immediately. It promise it will make your life feel great no matter if you’re spending $2 or $20 on a t-shirt.
2. Right Side Out
Speaking of t-shirts, do yourself a favor and hang everything the right side out. Button up those tops so they don’t feel sloppy, zip up the pants and buttons. Basically treat your closet like you would a showroom floor.
3. Color Code
You will notice in the above photo that all of my tops and blazers are categorized by color. The black blazers are all together in order of casual to dressy, the camel tones, printed textures and everything has a reasoning behind the order. This will make putting an outfit together feel much easier and add clarity to your choices.
4. Try Tailoring
Any pieces that you keep avoiding might be up for tailor consideration. I have a pair of black pants that I really love but I never wear because they are too long and I can’t find any shoes that will go with them. I need to get them tailored ASAP but they’re just taking up space in my closet when I could be getting a ton of wear out of them. Ask yourself which pieces you avoid wearing and why before you decide to toss them.
5. Clean Everyday
Yes, I said every day. When you are getting dressed, don’t just toss things on the floor. When you get home from a long day of work, avoid throwing your jacket on the chair by the front door. Try to keep a very consistent and steady habit of taking care of your closet the way you would take care of a the most precious valuable item you own.
