These Are The Absolute Best Plus Size Fashion Purchases I Made In 2019

I gave up traditional New Year’s resolutions a long time ago. After years of telling myself I had to reach a goal in the next 365 days or I would have failed, I decided to reject the idea of resolutions altogether. The idea that the only form of success you can achieve in a year is correlated to the amount of weight lost or money earned seemed tired, and I was exhausted from feeling like a work in progress instead of existing at my best in that moment. I still get excited for the new year, of course, but now my resolutions look a little more like intentions rather than hard-and-fast goals. This past year, one of my intentions was to be more meditated about the new pieces of clothing I brought into my closet.

As someone who writes about fashion, I have the privilege of being gifted clothing on a regular basis. This means that whether I go shopping or not, I end up with more clothing than I know what to do with. In past years, I would shop a lot on top of these gifted pieces and end up with piles of clothes that I never wore, or just wore once.

This year, though I still occasionally purchased new pieces, I cut back on the shopping trips for the sake of boredom that led to unneeded consumption and stopped buying special occasion dresses that are only worn a handful of times. I also thrifted secondhand more often and rented clothing regularly when I had back-to-back events. After a year of adjusting my fashion shopping habits, I feel much better than I ever have before about my wardrobe. I truly appreciate every item I bought and wore last year. While it's a smaller list than the years before, click ahead for the nine best plus size clothing purchases (and one gifted item) from my 2019 year of guilt-free shopping.

I am confident that I have worn this leopard print midi skirt from Eloquii upwards of a hundred times in the past year. I’ve worn it in every single season repeatedly and I get compliments on it often. As someone notorious for ignoring clothing repairs for months, I got this skirt repaired the very next day after the zipper broke. I just couldn’t go on without it.

Eloquii Soft Printed Midi Skirt $79.95, Sizes 14 - 28, available at Eloquii.

This dress was one of my only impulse purchases of the year when I found it on sale on Nordstrom a couple of months ago. I justified it because it works as a beach cover-up for vacation and a dress. I know it will last for years to come and it feels luxurious whenever I wear it.

Mara Hoffman Malika Off-the-Shoulder Maxi Dress $395.00 $118.50, Sizes XS - XXL, available at Net-A-Porter.
Though not strictly plus size, this peasant dress is something I thought about for years before finally purchasing it this year. I loved it (and buying it) so much that I even wrote a whole article about it.

Innika Choo Peasant Dress $290.00, Sizes 1 - 3, available at Innika Choo and Shopbop.
An unlimited Rent The Runway membership is not cheap, but considering that I used to spend about $250 on clothing before each and every vacation and work trip I went on, it’s worth it for me. This is one of the main things that keeps me from overshopping and I am convinced it saves me money in the long-run when I use it regularly. Read my Rent The Runway review, here.

Rent the Runway Unlimited $159.00 $80.00 trial for two months, available at Rent The Runway.
NVLT Mustard Coat, $30, Sizes 0 - 22, available to rent at Rent The Runway.
I originally rented this jumpsuit from Rent The Runway, and I loved it so, so much that I purchased it second-hand from RTR. In my opinion, it's the perfect seasonal transition piece and I love how many compliments I get on it. Pro-tip, though: If you don’t want it to be really form-fitting, size up 1-2 sizes for this one.

Good American Waist-Tie Jumpsuit $115.90, Sizes 0 - 7, available at Good American.
Girlfriend Collective's combination of sustainability, quality, and size inclusivity cannot be beat and every Girlfriend piece in my closet feels intentional and purposeful. This is another purchase I loved so much that I wrote a whole article about these leggings, here.

Girlfriend Collective Compressive High Rise Leggings $68.00, Sizes XS - 6X, available at Girlfriend Collective.
This was a gifted piece, but it's something I have worn dozens of times in the last year and with countless different looks. The versatility of the sleeves (they can be worn up or down and off-the-shoulder) makes it feel like two tops in one, which is an added bonus,

Eloquii Dramatic Puff Sleeve Wrap Top $46.99, Sizes 14 - 28, available at Eloquii.
Plus, take 40% off your purchase with the checkout code MERRY.
This slip skirt was something that I thought I would feel guilty about buying. It was one of those last-minute, “ah, I could always return it,” purchases where I didn’t even try it on at the store. However, it turned out to be one of the most versatile warm-weather staples in my closet.

Madewell Midi Slip Skirt in Painted Spots $98.00, Sizes 00 - 24, available at Madewell.
I fell so in love with this cozy jumpsuit I picked up at Target on a whim in the spring that I convinced hundreds of people to buy it, too (yes, I wrote an article about it as well). It’s a lounge staple in my wardrobe now and I still have people messaging me, telling me how much they love it!

Similar: A New Day Sleeveless V-Neck Knit Jumpsuit $32.99, Sizes 1X - 5X, available at Target.
