Found: 2020’s Biggest Nail-Art Trends

To say nail art took off in 2019 would be an understatement. This year, fingernails became tiny canvases for unexpected prints (like cow), filed into novel shapes (like lipstick tips), and each trend was more innovative than the last.

In the new year, this rise is not going to slow. On the contrary, the designs are becoming even more nuanced, and therefore appealing to every kind of aesthetic. From the latest your-nails-but-better minimalist accent (meet the cuticle dot), to bright geometric pop art, and of course, a fresh spin on the classic French manicure, we have your guide to the nail-art trends for 2020, predicted by seasoned nail pros. Scroll through for the full forecast.

Dark French

As the most recognizable nail-art design, the French manicure is a favorite baseline structure to glean inspiration. For 2020, the traditionally white tip will likely pendulum all the way across the color wheel to a dark tone. Olive & June founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle tells us the glossy, black-tipped French is starting to boom in the L.A. salons, capitalizing on a classic-turned-edgy aesthetic.

Soft Matte Ombré

Between Skittle nails and a diffused gradient situation, the multicolored mani was big in 2019 and will find its place in 2020 as well. Nail pro Jin Soon Choi tells us that we'll see a boom in this soft, tonal ombré. "I see nuanced nudes and pale neutral tones worn together," Choi explains. "I love a matte finish, which matches the subdued and sophisticated look."

'80s Geometric Art

This past fall, we saw a resurgence in '90s-inspired nail-art designs, like leopard print and butterfly appliqués, and for 2020 we're going back again — but this time to the '80s. "I predict a lot of geometric lines and shapes hand-painted in a very '80s style," says celebrity nail artist Gina Alcedo. "It's a bright, wild, and a super-fun manicure."

Cuticle Dot

Meet the cuticle dot: A delicate nail-art design that Alcedo predicts will take off in the new year. "It's a play on dimensions and negative space," she explains of the minimalist aesthetic (not unlike cuticle striping). "That perfect dot just above the nail bed is a refined look that adds intrigue to a sheer, bare nail."

Metallic Accents

Think about your 2020 manicure as an accessory. "Whether it's a stripe of gold or a pop of silver platinum, it's about adding a subtle design on each finger to dress up your manicure," Tuttle explains of the spike in shimmery tips and look-at-me stripes. "Over a bare or nude base shade, any shiny metallic polish is a foolproof accent."
