Google Unveils 2019's Most Popular Halloween Costume Searches
Who or what should you be for Halloween this year? Or perhaps the question is, who or what should you not be?
RELATED: What Your Halloween Costume Says About You
Because Google has crunched the numbers on Halloween costumes of 2019 to compile Frightgeist, a list of the most-searched-for outfits both nationally and in your neighborhood.
Have some tabs open? Good. Because here’s what’s on-trend.
COSTUME WIZARD
Frightgeist has an appealingly simple set-up. Presented in the style of blocky 1980s-style graphics on a wobbly CRT television, it consists of a simple list of the top costumes, a costume wizard and a map of the top costumes across the United States. It looks ace but a Google engineer probably threw it together in half an hour or so.
The wizard is pretty neat. It allows you to fiddle with a bunch of parameters to deliver a costume idea. There’s a Spookiness Level bar, a Uniqueness Level bar, the choice of style between Classic and Modern, and a choice to drill down on either local or national trends.
Google TrendsSo a modern, highly trending and highly spooky costume is the Demogorgon from “Stranger Things,” for example. While a costume with low spookiness, a high level of uniqueness and classic style is Elmo from “Sesame Street.”
TOP-RATED COSTUMES
Still, we’re really here to see what people are wearing in 2019. And there are some obvious and not-so-obvious characters topping the list, both specific and generic.
Pennywise, the clown from “It,” is the most searched for costume this year, which isn’t surprising given that we’re coming off the back of the recently released “It: Chapter Two.” Spider-Man has also proven popular in 2019. After the second standalone installment in the Tom Holland reboot of the character, and a subsequent back and forth between Sony and Marvel over financing and profit-sharing of a third film, Spidey comes in at number three on the list.
Google TrendsOther character or franchise-specific outfits that are currently ranking highly on the list include “Descendents,” “Fortnite,” “Stranger Things,” DC’s Harley Quinn and Chucky from the “Child’s Play” franchise. In terms of more general searches, dinosaurs, witches, unicorns, rabbits, the 1980s and clowns all appear among the top 20. Some of the more esoteric top searches include fairies, angels, bears and cheerleaders.
Looking to go for something off the beaten path? Well, ranking down around the 300 mark are Logan from the “X-Men” franchise, Captain Hook and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Head out as one of these characters and you’re less likely to clash with Josh, Nick and Kyle.
Of course, if you (and your best pal) really want to win Halloween, you could just emulate these two legends.
