Men Are Emotionally Closer to Dogs Than Humans, Says Science

While it's long been held as common wisdom that dogs are, in fact, man's best friend, there is now some scientific basis to back it up. Men are generally more emotionally connected to dogs than they are to humans, according to science.

Published in Anthrozoös, the paper by retired professor and psychologist Dr. Chris Blazina illustrates that dogs are often the anchor companion in the lives of many men.

The whole research project was kicked off by the tragic passing of Dr. Blazina's beloved dog, Kelsey, and the grieving process that came along with the death of the doctor's loyal canine companion.

“When I started grieving the loss of my old friend part of that process was to understand why Kelsey was so important in my life,” Blazina told Metro. “One of the realisations was grief involving people was a lot like grief with an animal companion. We build an attachment, we deal with loss, and we try to preserve some parts of our bond. The later part is sometimes referred to as a continuing bond.”

According to the research, 62 percent of men surveyed admitted to sharing an “almost always” secure relationship with Fido, while just 10 percent said they felt as secure with their closest human companion. That's such a stark difference that it bears wondering why men are so overwhelmingly attached to dogs, and does the fact that a dog is often submissive and silent reinforce this sense of masculine security?

These answers and others are played at and teased out in the abstract of Dr. Blazina's most recent research, with other questions surrounding the effect that traditional gender roles have on male interaction with their furry friends. The idea that men — particularly macho men — are less likely to report psychological distress, was reinforced in the study. The outcome also supported the idea that the strong and silent type are less likely to show obvious outward affection to their dog, often masking their love.

So, as it turns out, while the relationship between Frank and Fido is difficult, it isn’t quite as difficult to navigate as it is between two human friends.
