Using More Emojis Gets More Dates and More Sex, Says Study

Emojis are probably the most popular way of expressing yourself in internet shorthand nowadays. You’ve probably used the occasional eggplant emoji, poop emoji, okay emoji, 100 emoji … the list goes on. But, did you know that if you up your emoji usage, you have a better chance at getting dates?

While everybody is scrapping over whether the poop emoticon began its life as a swirly ice cream cone or as an actual piece of poo, actual scientists are getting down to work on discovering the truth about how we as a society engage with emojis.

And there’s good news for single guys and girls. According to a study published in PLOS One, if you use emojis on a frequent basis in your online messages, you're more likely to land a hot date or get laid.

According to the research, those unrepentant emoji fanatics who send at least a few along the text string every once in a while are absolutely more likely to be lucky in love. Pulling data from previous investigations into the matter conducted by The Kinsey Institute, researchers explored how (and why) people were using emojis to win over a potential date.

“Our findings suggest that emoji use with potential partners is associated with maintaining connection beyond the first date, and more romantic and sexual interactions over the previous year,” study authors Amanda N. Gesselman, Vivian P. Ta, and Justin R. Garcia write in the provided abstract.

“This research provides evidence that emojis convey important affective information to potential partners and are potentially associated with more successful intimate connection.”

While all of this academic talk may sound a little bit dry, the reality is that emojis work on a very basic, visceral level for most people. Those who were sent emojis on at least a semi-frequent basis said that the bright little symbols made it easier to express themselves properly, to perhaps cut out some redundant or pointless typing, and to make sure their messages weren't being mixed. Gesselman and her team expressed this as well when writing about their findings.

“Because text-based communication can lack much of the sensory information found in face-to-face interactions that promote affective expression and meaningful communication, the character features (e.g., colors, shapes, actions, faces) of emojis may allow communication partners to more readily express affect and introduce it into CMC [computer-mediated communication].

Some participants from the survey data polled also admitted to sending out emojis simply because they were trendy or popular and most of us are likely guilty as charged on this score.

Whether or not emojis resonate with you on a romantic level, the science seems to back up the suggestion that they do, indeed, make you seem a bit cooler and more attractive on average. So, pick up your smartphone and start loading all of the emoji packs you can find (but probably not the poop one).
