KFC Testing Beyond Meat Vegan Fried Chicken
Colonel Sanders and his signature brand have had a rough go of it in recent years, seeing sales stagnate amid massive competition from Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, and Church's among others. However, the newest collabo with Beyond Meat might be the answer to helping the fried chicken brand get back on top.

According to CNN, KFC has announced that they will be the first major fast-food chicken operation to serve up offerings from Beyond – the brand responsible for the Beyond Meat products flooding store shelves everywhere. Given that Beyond has seen their stock price nearly quintuple in value since first going public in May, the chicken-slingers at KFC may have hedged their bets correctly on this play.
The major demographic being targeted? Flexitarians. If you don't know what a flexitarian is – or perhaps incorrectly (but understandably) assume that it's some sort of yoga master or gymnastics trainer – you're not alone. The term is a relatively recent one, emerging alongside the rather novel demand for meat alternatives coming from carnivores.
Those who eat meat regularly but would perhaps be down to eat a little bit less – that is, if it tastes good and is affordable – are flexitarians, and they are a booming sales demographic.

With Beyond Meat and Subway recently offering their meatless meatball marinara sub, and the trend of quick-service restaurant chains tossing a few eye-catching options to the flexitarians shows no signs of stopping. Del Taco's “Beyond Taco” has brought the chain back to profitability and growth, and KFC likely expects the same from their vegan popcorn “chicken.”
Advertised in a white-and-green cup with the somewhat cheeky promise that “it's still finger lickin' good,” the Beyond Fried Chicken might have a chance. A small bowl of the chain’s signature brown gravy beside the bucket of vegan chicken at least looks like the claimed “Kentucky Fried miracle.”
The first KFC to receive this menu item happens to be in Atlanta, Georgia, and there can be little doubt that local residents will flock to the fast-food franchise to try this first of its kind food offering. Sales of Beyond Fried Chicken begin today, so it won't be long before eater reviews reveal whether or not the meatless chicken will fly – or flop.
Of course, those dedicated carnivores who care little for the very idea of a vegan chicken can still grab a bucket of the colonel's finest. That being said, if Beyond's market play pays off, that famous bowl might find itself filled with delicious vegan chicken rather than the traditional popcorn chicken before too long.
In any event, anyone following the chicken wars, should probably themselves for the future. The chicken king might not even be chicken.
