Ford to Launch an Electric F150 Pickup Truck

Ford has sent shockwaves through the automotive world by teasing an electric version of their best-selling pickup truck, the F150, as it tows a freakin’ train weighing more than a million pounds.

Within the auto industry, the pickup truck is synonymous with America and American muscle. Think big, powerful engines, a giant flatbed, and all the pulling power you’d need to get through a day’s hard work. The sales figures prove their popularity: in 2018 alone, over 2 million pickups were solid in America. And the undisputed king of the pickups, the model that moved almost twice as many units as its closest competitor, is Ford’s F150.

So it’s safe to say that what they do with their top-selling model has consequences for the rest of the industry.

It’s also a move that reflects a growing concern with climate change and CO2 emissions, as well as increases in the price of gas. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had previously teased an electric pickup truck prototype, which almost certainly put the entire pickup industry on notice, and Ford has even hinted at an electric version of their famous Mustang. As electric car batteries become larger and more powerful, and as America’s infrastructure for recharging electric vehicles improve, we can expect to see many more all-electric variants of famous car brands.

But not everyone is in love with this news. Old-school petrol heads and devotees of the classic American muscle car will miss the sounds and smells of the high-revving, high-octane engines of the past, which certainly seem to have more character than the quiet, almost vibrationless electric engines on offer today. But as anyone who has driven a Tesla can testify, there are upsides to modernization, and driving purists will be able to look forward to some truly “ludicrous” performance gains

If Ford can match or even exceed the raw power of its older, petrol F150s, in a package that’s environmentally friendly and more economical, then we can safely say that America’s king of the pickups has a bright future ahead of it.
