Why Summer Sex Is the Best Sex

The thought of doing anything during a hot summer day sounds painful. With the sun beating down, only a few steps are required before you’re drenched in sweat. Time would be better spent immobilized in front of the air conditioner by your lonesome, right? Well… think again. In fact, stay in front of the AC, but have a friend join you.

Despite your initial desire to do whatever it takes to beat the heat, the best time to have sex is actually during the warm summer months. Sure, it might sound exhausting or involve too much effort, but in reality, it’s actually the ideal time to roll around naked with your partner.

And as you’re probably curious as to why, here are a few expert-supported reasons explaining exactly why summer sex is so damn hot (sorry, had to).

1. The Sun’s Rays Will Do Wonders for Your Hormone Levels

During the summer, people typically spend more time outdoors. Whether at the park, beach or just strolling down a sidewalk, you’re going to be exposed to those sunny rays. Know what that means? Serotonin — and lots of it.

“Sunlight boosts serotonin levels, which can improve mood,” explains Jack Burke of Hims. “Furthermore, sunlight decreases melatonin levels, which have been known to interfere with sex hormones, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone.”

Vitamin D (something you get from the sun’s rays) can also help to balance out your hormone levels. “In men, it increases testosterone production and in women, it balances estrogen,” explains wellness advocate Fiona Gilbert.

In the more general sense, summer months tend to provide you with the opportunity to escape your normal routine. No matter where it is that you actually go (be it a trip or otherwise), it’s more about that moment and what you’ll feel during it.

“Summer can mean more vacations and new experiences, which boost levels of feel-good hormones, (i.e. dopamine) in the brain,” notes sex educator August McLaughlin.“You might even feel like you're falling in love again with a long-time partner, thanks to a sense of adventure and novelty. Those same chemicals are linked with those initial punch-drunk feelings, as well as orgasm. All of that can make sex more likely and more pleasurable.”

2. There’s Plenty More Skin Exposed in Public Settings

Warm temperatures means less puffy coats and more tank tops. Naturally, if we’re seeing more skin out in the open, it’ll get you riled up whether you like it or not.

“Exposed, naked skin in bikinis and tight swimming trunks adds eroticism to our sensory systems,” explains Dr. Fran Walfish, Psy.D., a Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist. “The feel of fresh air blowing directly against our naked skin, as well as the visual sight of revealing parts adds to our excitation levels.”

All that bare skin, and opportunities for skin-to-skin contact, contributes to higher levels of arousal. It seems heat and horniness just go together.

“Summer adventures like beach trips, picnics or walking through the park holding hands offer added opportunities to slip a hand lower and caress your romantic partner’s thigh. Summer facilitates many more opportunities for physical touch that also contributes to summer flings being so darn sexy.”

3. People Are Naturally Less Stressed During This Time of Year

Just knowing you get to leave work early, or perhaps the thought of laying out on a beach, can immediately set a person in a good mood. It’s that bright, positive all-around feeling you have that, in turn, will allow you to see sex as a much more appealing thing (at least, more appealing than usual).

“Your adrenals (which are responsible for producing many hormones like cortisol aka the ‘stress hormone’) are not working as hard,” says Gilbert. With summer vacation plans, folks can step away from their daily stress, giving their adrenal glands a break.

“What most people don’t realize is that after the age of 35, your adrenals are also responsible for helping regulate your sex hormones. So having a relaxed, happy adrenal system will also rev up your libido.”

4. Summer Months Means Longer Days

More time spent outside — out from in front of your TV, computer or cell phone — means more opportunities to meet someone. Take advantage of those long, summer days, as you can bet a lot of people will be making the most of the gorgeous weather before things turn frigid again.

“Between barbecues, beach days and long holiday weekends, summertime is full of social gatherings,” adds Burke. “The days are longer, so people have more time to mingle and flirt.”

Makes sense, right?

Summer is a time where you should embrace the chance of being less stressed, enjoying that natural sunlight to better yourself in various ways. With that added increase to our hormone levels (in connection with our moods, desires and so forth), it’d be crazy not to bask in the glory that is summer … with someone else, that is.

Go forth, sweat a little and have some sex while you’re at it.
