Junk Food Is Linked to Irreversible Low Sperm Count

Many of us enjoy our cheeseburgers, chips, and other junk food, especially throughout our younger years. While we know it isn’t good for us, many don’t know to what extent. For guys, eating all of that junk food could be causing irreversible damage to their sperm counts.

Sure, it’s common knowledge that fast food and junk food diets are a staple of being an American teenager – Pepsi, Coke, the McDonald's dollar menu, and a few bags of Cool Ranch Doritos have become something of a “teen starter pack,” to co-opt a favorite meme. However, a diet lacking in basic staples such as fruit, vegetables, and lean proteins can have some serious health effects beyond the traditional heart and stomach concerns.

A new study presented at the annual European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Vienna, Austria suggested some bad news for cheeseburger-and-fries fans. As it turns out, avoiding vegetarian diets (or at least diets which balance a high proportion of fruits and vegetables with fish and chicken) can have a seriously negative impact on your sperm count.

Professor Allan Pacey of Sheffield University, a fertility expert, summarized some of the results.

“It’s almost certain that this is down to an effect that those with the better diets are taking in more antioxidants,” Pacey said. “With pizza, chips, and red meat we know that the [oxidative] stress goes up and that is bad for sperm.”

The worst part? The damage might have already been done if you're in your 20s, or older. The study authors, researchers from Harvard University, said that processed foods and other convenience snacks actually antagonize the cells responsible for sperm health. So even if you decide to change course and eat healthier, you might not be able to recover those cells — once they are gone, they're gone.

In short, it might be impossible to make amends with your body for having treated it poorly during your teen years, at least in terms of your sperm production.

Keep in mind, however, that the study is meant to be scary. In The Telegraph, lead researcher Jorge Chavarro laid out a blunt case for spreading the news.

“You would be surprised to see how sensitive young men are to things that might affect sperm count, because it’s a perceived measure of masculinity,” he said.

If you’ve had your fill of junk food during your younger years, you should take heart, however. It’s never too late to take steps to improve your sperm count — and your overall health — by ditching the chips once in a while in favor of a light, leafy salad.
